When it comes to your smile the problem can be very minor and yet feel much greater. Perhaps it’s only one tooth that you’re not happy with? Maybe it’s a slightly different colour to the others, a different shape or not in line? Re-shaping or veneers may be the answer for you.
If there is a small chip or irregularity at the edge of the tooth, sometimes the appearance can be improved by carefully sanding the tooth to give a more regular shape. This is usually carried out without the need to be made numb.
Versatile cosmetic solution
Veneers can be used to improve the appearance of discoloured, misaligned or misshapen teeth. They are custom made, thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front surface of your tooth. The colour and shape can be matched to the rest of your teeth to achieve the appearance you want.
Careful planning with you
Whatever you have in mind, your dentist will discuss it thoroughly with you before beginning any treatment, ensuring that you will get the result you’re looking for.
Choice of materials
Veneers are constructed from either porcelain or resin composite, with both materials having distinct advantages. Porcelain resists staining better than composite and more accurately approximates the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. Composite veneers can be made thinner, meaning that you can keep more of the original tooth beneath the resin layer. Composite veneers are also less costly than porcelain.
Veneers are, on the whole, robust but will not last forever and will need some maintenance over time. Some amount of your natural tooth will need to be removed in order to produce a surface for the veneer to adhere to and, for these reasons, the decision to undergo this treatment should be made after some consideration.
